Tattoo: An art or advertising?

August 22nd, 2007 by mandira13aug

bnbbnxz

You might have seen many people with skulls and all sorts of meaningless stuff on there bodies all day long. This is nothing else, but it is today’s teen’s obsession- TATTOO. Tattoo has become the new tool to advertise product or service. YES! Have a look on the picture showing the name of the website- grownupgeek.com. Do you think this that advertising through this tattoo can work? I don’t know about you but I think the idea can’t get you huge success in terms of marketing because the reach of the audience is very less or limited. You can send your message to the people who saw your tattoo.

I can’t predict how people will react to this new way of advertising, but if this works then it’s not far before you start seeing your son or daughter wearing colorful logos of Pepsi, Coca cola or Instablogs on various part of their body. Don’t you think this could be nice way to earn pocket money? What do you think guys?

Tattoo culture - has it been really accepted?

August 20th, 2007 by khushi

full back tattoo

Tattoos are one style statement that almost everyone yearns for. Here in India, only metros are witnessing the rise of tattoo culture but outside tattoo culture is at its epitome. Ask anyone and they wouldn’t mind getting a tattoo, yes, it is true that the pain do keep some people away from the tattoo culture. However, technology comes to their rescue and thus, tattoos are now accessible, when and where you want.

Keeping the stylish side of tattoo culture aside, let’s once go through the fears of Kate Moody, an Ottawa woman who is now spending a good amount of bucks to get the bearded, fanged green and yellow monster removed from her foot. It is surprising and ironical to know that where today skin art is one of the ways to flaunt your attitude and spend thousands getting a right one, people like Moody are getting them removed. The lady was initially working with a clothing company and now has switched to being a fitness trainer. Nonetheless, she apprehends that the tattoo can cost her the job. Here is what Moody has to say,

I am kind of the poster child for tattoo regret. Whenever I hear people that are like, ‘I’m going to get a new tattoo,’ I’m like, ‘Think about that. They don’t appear professional, they’re not something I’m proud of. I find it takes away a little bit from my credibility … people think I’m a kid. You get a judgment from society, I find, which is something I could do without at this point in my life.

As per the American Association of Dermatologists, 50% of people who at some point of life decide to get a tattoo, later regret their decision and turn up for treatments. However, tattoo artists and other related to the culture have contradicting views. For them, tattoos have become popular and also are being accepted. That is the reason why, the taboo on tattoos doesn’t exist anymore and the tattoo business is scaling high peaks.

Nick Janna who works at Planet Ink on Ottawa’s Rideau Street, emphasized on the fact that tattoo parlors do abide by a few rules, which ensure that people don’t regret their decisions later on. As per him, most of the parlors don’t tattoo teens under eighteen. They also avoid tattooing on hands, necks, faces and other visible body parts. They also try to convince people not to get tattoos done in these areas. However, we all know that parlors who don’t have any rules also exist thus, making the situations more tough to deal with. Also, people sometimes go stubborn enough in their craze and later on regret over. Licensing of tattoo parlors, implementation of a few good rules for artists/ parlors and awareness on the part of artist himself, can lead to tattoos with healthier stories.

Santa Muerte Tattoo

August 17th, 2007 by Nidhi

mexico_saint_of_deathsff

Gosh! This tattoo scared me! I wonder why this woman has tattooed such scary thing on her back! Any guesses, whose image this lady is showing to us? Well, this scary thing is Mexico’s folk saint known as ‘Santa Muerte’ or ‘Saint of Death.’

Now Santa Muerte will no more scare you. Though, everyone still loves the skeleton, but now there will be no reason to criticize as Santa Muerte has changed its official image Sunday from that of a skeleton holding a globe and scythe to one of a female figure wearing a crown, in a cramped chapel in a working-class neighborhood of Mexico City.

After gazing this foot tattoo, you must be inquisitive about it. Ok! Let me tell you, this is Cindy Sheehan’s foot, tattooed with the name of her fallen son Casey above the ankle. Cindy Sheehan, the grassroots anti-war activist, citing her 24-year old son, Casey (who was killed in Iraq) as her inspiration announced her candidacy Thursday for a run at Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Science tattoo

To run a business, creativity and innovation is required to make it huge success. I think, the tattoo makers understand the above line properly. You might have pigmented so many tattoos like tribal tattoos, Celtic tattoos, tattoo designs, cross tattoos, flower tattoos, lower back tattoos, butterfly tattoos, sun tattoos on different parts of your body. So for tattoo enthusiastic, it is time to experiment new tattoo designs that will remind them few chapters of Biology. Yes! You have read it right.

It sounds funny but it is artistic, interesting and astonishing to depict skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles on your body. You can also ask to make DNA tattoo through your Tattooists. I think these tattoo are very beneficial for skin with scars and create illusion to cover up hideous defects and scars with normal-looking skin.

microsoft blue screen of death bsod tattoo

Hey, is this an attempt to scare geeks? If it is so, I have no words for it. I think this nerd needs to reboot his brain. Moreover, I can’t understand what is more worse - the Zune guy getting three Zune tattoos, or this Microsoft blue screen of death (BSOD) tattoo.

Today, everyone is talking about this tattoo but it’s sad to say that maximum of them don’t know who is the master behind it. But let me tell you who is the great personality behind this tattoo. She is Sam Rulz of Two Hands Tattoo who lives in Auckland, New Zealand. I must appreciate her for inking this amazing tattoo on Paul’s right arm.

Removable permanent tattoo ink coming this fall

July 26th, 2007 by Disha

edith mathiowitz new inkEdith Mathiowitz and her team in Brown University Laboratory at Rhode Island, United States, has made tiny particles coated in polymers. These particles are used to make new permanent ink that will be easily erased by a laser treatment.

Mathiowitz has made microencapsulated beads filled with dyes along with Freedom-2 Holdings Inc., who has funded and holds the license to make and sell their ink (Freedom-2) based on the research.

Micro-encapsulation is a process in which tiny particles or droplets are surrounded by a coating to give small capsules with many useful properties. This technique is usually used as a drug delivery system or for any process that needs controlled release.

The new patented ink can be easily removed via laser. Generally, it takes about 6-7 laser treatments to remove a tattoo using traditional ink, but this ink can be easily removed by a single laser treatment, which breaks the polymer beads, allowing the body to naturally expel the dye that is trapped inside. Moreover, this ink is safer as it is free of heavy metals and other toxins.

The new ink is scheduled for this fall.

July 23rd, 2007 by Disha

isobel varley

There is no age to get a tattoo and Isobel Varley, 69, is the name to prove this fact as a retiree. In 2000, Mrs. Varley was recognized by the Guinness World Records as “The World’s Most Tattooed Senior Woman” and still she holds this title. She lives in Stevenage, a small town north of London, where she grew up but travels to tattoo conventions around the world. Disha Singh: At the age of 49 you got your first stroke, wasn’t it too late?

Disha: Some people call you ‘crazy’ what do you have to say to them.

Isobel: It’s my body and I believe that I can do what I like with it and it really does not bother me what people think. However, I do not attempt to force my views on tattooing on others as tattoos are a personal choice.

Disha: Who is Isobel apart from being ‘The World’s Most Tattooed Senior Woman.’

Isobel: I am an ordinary housewife who does all the things that housewives do.

Disha: Tattooing is a growing fad among the new generation, what tips do you have for them.

Isobel: It is important that any person considering having a tattoo has given it lots of thought as to whether it is right for them. Also, if a person is having several, it is not a good to idea to have just small ones, as the area finishes up just an untidy mess.

Disha: On which part of your skin would you never get a tattoo? Have you ever faced any allergy en route of tattoos?

Isobel: I doubt whether I will have anything, significant added to my face as it may repulse some people. I have been fortunate in not having an allergy problem from tattooing ever.

Disha: Of all the tattoos cast on your body, which one do you cherish the most? Why and what does it symbolize.

Isobel: The tattoo that I cherish the most is the group of tigers on my stomach as I am very fond of wild animals.

Disha: Who is your favorite tattoo artist and why. Which tattoo artist has inked you the most?

Isobel: In general, I have only got work from tattooist whose work I respect and I would not like to single out any particular artist. I think Brent from Dunstable has done the most work on me and I thank him for encouraging me to go for large work.

Tattoo Artist Of The Week: Nick Baxter

July 16th, 2007 by Disha

nick baxter interview
(Nick Baxter with his mom)

Nick Baxter is a renowned name in the tattoo field and today I am glad to publish his interview for you. He began his journey into the field of art When he was a teenager and apart from tattooing he has interests in oil painting, drawing, and photography. This year you can see his seminar presentation on “Fundamentals of Realist Oil Painting” at the 5th Hell City Tattoo Festival in August.

Mostly there is a symbolism behind his tattoos, however, enough said, know him better in his own words in this interview.

nickbaxter tattoo 1

Disha: Let’s start with your first rendezvous with the art. When did it start and how?

Nick Baxter: I started tattooing in 2000, at the age of 19, after beginning to get heavily tattooed upon turning the legal age of 18. I learned to tattoo through a typical tattoo shop apprenticeship, which lasted about 6 months and taught me all the basics.

nickbaxter tattoo 2

Disha: What fuels the fire within you to keep going on and on? What sense of fulfillment do you get after inking a design?

Nick: I’ve had a lifelong interest in art, and expressing myself visually and creatively, so tattooing for me is just one extension of this passion. Creating art produces a great sense of fulfillment in me, because it’s a very primal, instinctual process of communicating, and in sense you get to ‘play god’ for a short period of time, and make the image in your head appear in front of you on the canvas, or on skin.

nickbaxter tattoo 3

Disha: Is body art an obsession for you? How deep are you soaked into it?

Nick: I don’t consider it an obsession, but it is certainly a fascination and something that gives me pleasure or satisfaction, especially upon creating or viewing a piece of body art that I think is really beautiful. I have many other interests and priorities, and end up tattooing usually around 3 to 5 days per week. I try to balance it out with other important things in my life.

nickbaxter tattoo 4

Disha: Nick, could you please share any good or bad experiences/requests you’ve encountered for a tattoo?

Nick: Some of the greatest experiences I’ve had with tattooing occur when I am able to really make a positive impact on someone’s life or appreciation of themselves, by doing a meaningful tattoo on them. In those moments the technical and business aspects of tattooing are transcended by a more important level of human connection. Some of the worst experiences I’ve had with tattooing occur when the client somehow doesn’t like the tattoo I put on them, but luckily that hasn’t happened too often.

nick baxter tattoo 5

Disha: For our readers’ information please tell us how much does a piece cost?

Nick: I generally charge by the hour, at around $120. Cost is almost always determined simply by the length of the tattooing session.

nick baxter ankle tattoo

Disha: How have things changed regarding your inking over the years?

Nick: So much has changed, it’s pretty difficult to put it all into words. All artistic creation is linked to the time, place, and conditions under which it was conceived. The most obvious things that have changed with my tattooing have been my overall level of artistic knowledge, and my knowledge of the intricacies of the tattooing craft in particular. In other areas things have changed in that I now do only custom original artwork, and I am afforded the luxury of being able to pick and choose the projects I want to take on. I am more of my own boss nowadays.

nickbaxter tattoo 8

Disha: How far would you like to take your body art?

Nick: To the limits of my ability and creativity, and as far as the medium of skin will allow those ideals to be realized. Hopefully, when I’m done people can look upon my body of work and all I’ve done and be able to gain something positive for themselves from it.

nickbaxter tattoo 9

Disha: Tell me frankly, what is there in tattoos, despite all the pain, that drive people and of course, you, crazy?

Nick: Well, besides the pain, there are a lot of things that drive me crazy about the tattoo industry as a whole. Like, certain business practices, attitudes, ethics, etc. But, as for tattoos themselves, just having to deal with and compensate for the limits of the human body is really the only thing that can drive me crazy sometimes. Human skin is in a constant state of slow deterioration, and it eventually dies altogether, when the person dies, so the beauty of tattoos is often a fleeting feeling. They are both “permanent” and impermanent at the same time.

nick baxter
(Nick and his pet - Danny)

Disha: In addition, who is Nick Baxter apart from a being a tattoo artist?

Nick: Aside from tattooing, I enjoy all kinds of artistic expression, especially oil painting, drawing, and photography. I tend to lean far left toward anarchism in my political and social beliefs, and I am into trying to make the world a better, more cooperative place. I am vegan (strict vegetarian—no animal products whatsoever) and straight edge (completely sober—no drugs, alcohol, smoking, etc).

nickbaxter tattoo 10

Disha: Finally, I would like to know your outlook about Tattooblog.

Nick: I think that any media outlet that portrays the artform of tattooing in a realistic and positive way, with the input of real, dedicated tattoo artists, is a great thing.

Thanks Nick for sparing out time for this fantastic interview and wish you luck for all future endeavors.

The most amazing tattoo ever!

July 12th, 2007 by Disha

chessboard-facial-tattoo_49

He was perhaps out and over, wondering what kind of a tattoo would best capture his passion – least realizing where the line between fanaticism and madness was drawn.

Face turned into a chessboard, quite amazing, but was he really a chess buff or was it something else that drove this guy into a moving chessboard. He has covered his body from head to toe with various tattoos.

When I first saw the image my instant reaction was...is it a face or a chessboard? This person seems to be a fanatic! Here are some more astonishing photos of his tattoos, just have a look:
